With baby shopping, parents quickly find there are things for everyone and products marketed toward certain people. Strollers, toys and monitors – Dad. Clothes, crib bedding sets and nursing chairs – Mom. Ever notice how the clothes are right next to monitors and bedding is next to toys? This is marketing. You’ll especially find this with diaper bags…right next to the bikes and walkers that look like cars.
Oh, I didn’t care one bit what HM wanted to get for a bag. I’m not carrying it, what do I care how pretty it is or if it can hold the toddler’s things plus yours. Yea I know, didn’t see that one coming. After countless trips to the store with HM or solo, the zoo, get-to-gethers and BBQ’s, I realized I use this thing. Now, no offense to HM but she got an over sized purse that was labeled a diaper bag. Men cannot use this thing without feeling a bit like Mrs. Doubtfire.
Enter HM, super wife. She (again) came to the rescue with another win of a giveaway contest from Parent’s Magazine. She was able to get me my own New York Yankee Diaper Dude Bag!! Cue the cheers/groans for the Yankees. Yes, having grown up in NY, I love the Yankees. And Diaper Dude just made a deal with MLB to license these products.
Now, I have never heard of Diaper Dude until HM told me about this giveaway and here is what my research dug up. A Dad one day realized that fatherhood has changed greatly since the days of Mad Men. Dad’s take their children on outings and to the store for grocery’s or just because it’s boring at home sometimes. We aren’t bound to the Mother’s of our children or need supervision to make sure we don’t ‘accidentally’ paint our kids green with ripped purple shorts and warn people that walk by in the mall “don’t make him angry.” (Hulk reference…check) Sure outings are easier when the Moms are there but C’mon Moms. Admit it. Its easier when we’re there too. So why cant we have a diaper bag designed for us? Thank you Diaper Dude.
This bag is perfect. It has a design much like the book bag I had in college. Three large zipper pockets in front for easy access to food pouches, sunglasses, or a quick toy. Oh, and these are ZIPPERS, large, easy to see and grab, zippers. A large main compartment for extra clothes, diapers (duh), wipes and it comes with a changing pad. This is essential since we Dad’s use a restroom that isn’t always kept as nice as other genders’. Oh, and there is a special pocket for the pad which I have never seen a female version have (this also is great for when the wife wants you to carry her double sized wallet. A small zipper pocket in the main compartment, in case your activities make wallets uncomfortable to carry, or other items you don’t want easily accessible. And there is a key hook as well. There is also a bottle holder that I haven’t utilized yet. it’s a little small for D’s sippy cups but the New Edition will surely allow me to try it out! There are two open pockets in the back which I use as emergency “Get It Out Of My Hands” pockets. And it is rugged enough to withstand trips to the zoo, it being thrown into the car and cart, and D taking it off the table and carrying it around like Dad, when I forget to put it out of his reach (in the closet since he reaches everywhere).
Now I typically take D to the zoo every Saturday so we can have guy time and HM can sleep in for once. In earlier trips, even with HM, we needed to unload the diaper bag and put things we would need in the bottom of the stroller. Cause her bag cant fit and the stroller straps her’s came with doesn’t work or I just didn’t bring it. NOT ANY MORE!!! This bag has great stroller straps that are metal and use D rings. A Guy Designed This Thing. I bet he mountain climbs. It take two seconds to connect it and were are off to see the giraffes while we have some breakfast!
Here is the best part for you Mom’s. HM and I took D on some errands and before we left I asked “do you want your bag or mine?” HM replied in the usual “doesn’t matter to me.” So I said you can bring yours. Big Mistake. D and I, as usual, let HM go look at things we need while we go look at things that are fun. I end up using her bag. Its uncomfortable, hard to find things in and I never can tell the front from the back. I wanted my Diaper Bag. So HM now doesn’t carry her things when we go out of the house. I do…with my bag
Here is the one downside to this bag. The cell phone case is small and no way could a smart phone fit. Luckily I don’t have one and mine does fit.
I highly recommend this for any new Father or a Father who is tired of either forgetting something you need for a baby or using their spouses’. Yea, maybe you can use a regular back pack but remember, that is designed for people, not Dad’s.
I was not compensated for this post. All opinions are my honest point of view as a new Dad of two.
