Our Blissful Bedtime Routine #HuggiesTester

Our bedtime routine has been our saving grace. Early on, with our first little one we found that if he recognized when bedtime begins he was much more relaxed, and all around a happier little baby. At just two months old we started introducing a bedtime routine. One that worked for our little family. The Toddler, no longer a baby, still benefits from having a routine he can count on- one that guarantees he gets the much needed 11-12 hours of sleep a night.

When Em was born, I planned to implement the same strategy for bedtime. The need for routine and recognition of familiar tasks is really apparent, even at such a young age. When she was two months old we once again started her on her own bedtime routine. She thrived! From being a newborn up til two months it felt like mere chaos. Lack of sleep for everyone, no sense of what time it was, nor when she actually was “supposed” to go down to sleep at night. She would nurse for hours at night. Hours. Literally. From 6PM-10PM I was the sole caretaker from a little one that had no idea it was nighttime and that Mom was exhausted AND needed some sleep.

Enter the bedtime routine.

5PM: Em receives “dinner” which now includes a mixture of solid food along with a nursing session. After getting cleaned up, we have quiet playtime, the lights in the house are dimmed-in our case-we only keep on a few lamps.

6PM: Em and The Toddler head upstairs. They “play” with each other as the bath is drawn, toys are put away from the day, and pajamas are laid out.

6:30PM: Bathtime. The Toddler is in his half of the regular bath, playing with his toys, and Em is in her whale tub right next to him. They giggle and share toys back and forth. One of the best moments of the day. They truly enjoy being in the water AND love being with each other.

7PM: Em recieves a calming baby massage with lotion, gets her Size 4 Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers on, and her pajamas. The cool mist humidifier is turned on-a desert must-have(plus safe white noise). The small night light is turned on for me to be able to see as she has her last nursing session for the night.

7:15PM: Night light is off and Em is out. She sleeps until 4AM.

Em is seven months old and still wakes once for a feeding. She is not picky about much in her life, save for bedtime, and being wet. Goodness Gracious does she HATE to be wet!

Em is 16lbs of pure sweetness. We choose to put her in a Size Up of diapers at night because then she gets 8-9 hours of sleep in a row. BIG DEAL. Before we started using Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers with the SureFit Design she would leak through her diaper in the middle of the night. Around 1AM every night she would wake-up soaked and pissed.

My mom brain may have been fried at that time from a complete lack of sleep- BUT I did remember that The Toddler was a heavy wetter too. He went from waking soaked in the middle of the night to sleeping 12+ hours a night consistently- as soon as we went a SIZE UP in our Huggies Diapers.

I don’t know why I didn’t remember that sooner… so many sleepless nights with a cranky, wet baby.

Our bedtime routine made it possible for Em and The Toddler to fall asleep right away- and stay asleep. And with the addition of moving Em a Size Up in diapers? She went from sleeping 4 Hours a stretch to 7-8 Hours a stretch! I kid you not.
