Over the Rainbow
Learning about colors is quintessential to early-education learners. Since both of my kids were born I read books to them and answered their growing amounts of questions as they’ve grown through the years. Now at 4 & 5 we make time to play outside, paint, create, and discover the world around us.
Craft Fun with Goldfish Colors
Who doesn’t like to play with their food? My little girl created a rainbow out of the new Goldfish Colors and matched the one on the cinder-block wall that we drew with sidewalk chalk. I love that the Goldfish crackers are whole grain and baked with 100% real cheddar cheese. Em just loves the fact that they are different colors.
After-school Snack & Craft Time
My sweet kindergartner asked how the Goldfish crackers now had colors… and I was able to describe the different food and juices used to color each of them.
Whole Grain Goldfish Baked Crackers
Red: The red Goldfish crackers are colored using a mix of red beet juice concentrate and paprika extracted from sweet red peppers.
Green: The green Goldfish crackers color comes from watermelon & Huito juice concentrates mixed with extracted Turmeric.
Yellow: The yellow Goldfish crackers color comes from extracted Turmeric.
Blue: Our subtle blue crackers come from Huito (derived from South American fruit) and Watermelon juice concentrates.
We had to Google Huito as both of us had never heard of that before and VOILA, I was able to answer another of the hundreds of questions I get asked by my sweet kiddos.
Quality Time Outside
Craft Time:
Figuring Out Primary Colors
Items Needed:
Rectangular Baking Dish
1-2 cups of milk
Red Food Dye
Yellow Food Dye
Green Food Dye
Science Behind the Experiment? How primary colors are mixed to form new colors.
Well the milk will be the base for the color. So as you pour in the milk to coat the bottom of the dish (make sure there is at least a centimeter covering the dish) you can discuss how that is the white background for the color experiment. Now drop in three drops of red in one corner, three drops of yellow in one corner, and three drops of green in one corner. Now from your position you should have them describe the colors in the tray. The colors should not be mixing at this time.
Now your children can be instructed to gently blow on the colors moving the color dyes slowly closer together. Make sure the tray is not touched, nor their mouths get too close to the milk (they should not consume this). As the colors gently mix you can discuss how blue, purple, and orange are made.
A visual helps active learners with concepts and getting them involved in their own learning with an experiment? Makes the information that much easier to understand.
